New Year's Day Waihi Beach death likely a medical event

Police say a man who died in Waihi Beach on New Year's Day likely suffered a medical event.

Derrick Hann, 56, from Te Kuiti, was found dead in the suburb of Bowentown after reports of disorder.

His death was being investigated as a homicide.

Police said while the investigation was ongoing, inquiries indicate Hann died of a medical event and the Coroner has been notified.

Those involved in the incident have been spoken to, and police are not looking for anyone else.

In an unrelated incident, a 22-year-old man died at Waihi Beach on Saturday.

A 21-year-old has been charged with his murder.
