A new study says breast screening does not have a significant effect on the number of women dying of breast cancer.
The study in the British Medical Journal found the declining death rates in neighbouring European countries were similar, despite a gap of 10 to 15 years in the introduction of breast cancer screening.
It says improvements in treatment and healthcare may be a more plausible explanation for fewer deaths from the disease.
