A tourist filmed driving dangerously through the Lindis Pass has had his rental car contract cancelled after a member of the public took the keys off him.
It is at least the fourth incident in recent weeks in which keys have been taken off tourists by concerned drivers.
The latest happened yesterday afternoon, when a Christchurch man following the tourist through Lindis Pass filmed him crossing the centre line.
When the tourist stopped at Omarama, the man took the keys off him and the tourist and his family caught a bus to Christchurch.
Police spokesperson Constable Nayland Smith said people should call the police in such cases.
"Report it to the police. Ring 111 or *555. If you've got a phone take video footage. Whatever you do, don't take matters into your own hands. Let the police do that."
Mr Smith said the driving was not bad enough to charge the tourist with dangerous driving, but bad enough for the rental contract to be cancelled.
