Police have charged a 34-year-old man with murder following the death of a woman in Henderson, West Auckland.
Police were called to Newington Road shortly before 9pm on Tuesday.
Officers found a critically injured woman at the property and provided immediate first aid but she died at the scene.
The man was due to appear in the Waitakere District Court on Wednesday.
A neighbour said he heard four or five shots and then a car taking off.
He initially thought the sounds were fireworks or a car backfiring, but went to investigate.
"I heard some screaming, and there were a couple of girls on the drive with their friend who had been shot."
The neighbour said this scale of crime was uncommon for the area, which he said has just the occasional ratbag.
Other residents described the street as quiet, with one saying there were a few elderly residents who often walked around the block.
They said they were shocked by what had happened and saddened to hear someone had died.
Police said they believed this was an isolated incident and the pair were known to each other, and that there was no wider risk to the public.
