Hundreds of rowdy people turned out in Courtenay Place on Wednesday night, but it wasn't for the usual reasons.

Increasingly, Wellingtonians have been voicing their concerns about the city's dangerous and unsafe underbelly, in the form of sexual violence.

Thousands of people who responded to a survey attempting to gauge the problem last week reported unwanted sexual attention, drink spiking, harassment and even rape.

Hospitality workers and police agree the offending has increased and a rally was held last night strongly condemning the culture of Wellington's night life, and calling for change.
