Support for Auckland motorway charges

16:23 pm on 11 February 2015

New charges for using Auckland's motorways are favoured in early feedback to the council's 10-year budget.

Nearly 60 percent agree the city should build an extended programme of transport projects that would need new funding sources to pay for them.

When asked how those projects should be paid for, 34 percent favoured charges to use the motorways, with 31 percent backing higher property rates and petrol taxes.

Each result is from more than 500 responses.

Respondents were divided over the proposed overall rise in rates of 3.5 percent but did not indicate whether they thought that figure was too low or too high.

Public consultation on the city's Long Term Plan is open for another five weeks.
