New system at American Samoa airport introduces finger prints

07:49 am on 31 March 2014

A new finger print computer system installed recently at the Pago Pago International Airport in American Samoa will speed up background checks of employees working at secured areas of the airport.

As required by federal regulations all persons working at United States airports and needing access to designated secure areas, must go through a background check before a security badge is issued.

People requiring security badges include airport personnel, airlines employees and vendors.

Speaking on state-run television, the airport assistant director for security, Robert Tagovailoa, says the new computer system will help make some things easier.

"This finger print machine will expedite there finger printing process. This data goes through the US Department of Justice with the FBI."

Tagovailoa says monthly security threat assessment, or STA, of all employees who are issued airport security badges will also be carried out under the new system.
