A four-year-old has died at a Takapuna childcare centre following an accident on playground equipment, police say.
Police said they were called to Angels Childcare Centre on Anzac Street, shortly after 2pm.
In a statement, they said the child had died in what appeared to be a tragic accident involving playground equipment.
Inspector Cornell Kluessien said detectives were investigating on behalf of the coroner.
"Playground equipment looks like standard playground equipment but it's one of these accidental things that a perfect set of circumstances have sort of caused this tragedy."
The child's family had been advised, but police said it was too early to comment on the specifics of what happened.
WorkSafe had been informed.
RNZ's reporter at the scene said about a dozen family members and friends comforted each other outside the centre.
A hearse had taken the body from the scene and several police officers were at the scene.
Members of the public had placed bunches of flowers in a tree at the entrance to the centre.

Early Childhood Council chief executive Peter Reynolds said its members were saddened at the death, and sent their love and support to the child's family and friends, and to those who worked at the centre.
The council would eventually be looking at whether lessons could be learned from the death, he said.
