Commuter trains between Wellington - Wairarapa are to return to normal service on Monday.
The rail link was cut last Thursday evening by a landslip which partially derailed an engine and a passenger carriage at Maymorn, near Upper Hutt.
About 200 passengers were stranded there until late into the night.
Contractors have worked for three days to re-rail the locomotive and clear debris from the line. A trial service left Wellington just before 7pm on Sunday and was the first to get through.
KiwiRail says track crews will be inspect the site again on Monday morning: a 10km speed restriction is in place.
Weekend passengers were carried by bus.
