The last book written by Margaret Mahy won a prize at the New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards on Monday night.

Mister Whistler, published three months after she died in July last year, won Best Picture Book.

Daughter Penny Mahy accepted the award on her mother's behalf. She said she was surprised and delighted and it was a very poignant moment for the family.

The major prize, this year named the New Zealand Post Margaret Mahy Book of the Year, went to Ted Dawe for a book for older teenagers, Into The River.

Organisers described the book as explicit, containing young adult themes, but Dawe said his books are popular because he respects his audience.
