The Fiji Human Rights Commission has warned the European Union that removing grants to Fiji's sugar industry could amount to the EU violating Fiji's human rights.
The warning was issued by the Commission's chair, Dr Shaista Shameem, after the EU urged Fiji's interim regime to hold general elections by February.
She has told Radio Fiji that any measure imposed by the EU that severely threatens Fiji's freedom of trade would be prohibited under UN resolution 62/162.
The human rights advocate says the EU must not exploit the Cotonou Agreement to put inappropriate political and economic pressure on Fiji.
