Wellington sports groups plead for pokies to remain

Wellington sports groups are pushing the city council to scrap a proposal to ban new pokie machines in the capital.

The council's sinking lid policy would mean if existing pokie venues close down, the council won't allow a new one to open up.

It would also mean venues won't be able to increase the number of pokie machines.

RNZ's Jonathan Mitchell has been listening to submissions at the city council and spoke to Te Aniwa Hurihanganui.
