Cricket, kapa haka clash at Hagley Park

The Christchurch City Council is working to resolve a double-booking at Hagley Park on the opening day of the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

The opening match, on 14 February 2015, looks likely to clash with the country's largest kapa haka festival, Te Matatini.

An Environment Court ruling that allowed Canterbury Cricket to develop the Hagley Oval specifies matches can not be held in Hagley Park at the same time as other events when combined crowd numbers would exceed 20,000 people.

Council marketing and events unit manager Richard Stokes said options to resolve the date clash were being worked on.

"At the moment we are talking to the local organising committee for Te Matatini about two sets of dates they could potentially move to," Mr Stokes said.

"I think in those discussions there is a preference for some dates before Cricket World Cup is in the city."

The city would do what it could to host both events.
