A 50-hectare scrub fire has been burning out of control on the Karikari Peninsula in Northland.
Twelve fire trucks and three helicopters were fighting the blaze this evening.
A person with serious injuries was taken to hospital by ambulance.
Power was also out to about 1000 homes on the peninsula.
Fire and Emergency said the fire was sparked when a car hit a power pole this evening at 5.30pm on the corner of Ramp Road and Inslet Road, near Lake Ohia.
When darkness fell, firefighters were forced to scale back their efforts to battle the blaze.
