An Auckland man has been arrested after a sexual assault that took place in broad daylight last week.

The incident took place in a Takanini reserve parallel to train tracks between Walters Road and Tironui Station Road West, last Wednesday.

A 41-year-old has been charged with unlawful sexual connection and will appear before the Manukau District Court.

In a statement, police said a search warrant took place at an address at the weekend, resulting in the local man's arrest.

Detective Inspector Warrick Adkin said police took reports of sexual assault very seriously.

"I would like to acknowledge the hard work by all the police staff who contributed to the quick identification and arrest of the alleged offender which now puts him before the court."

Adkin said police were still looking for witnesses who were in the area at the time of the crime.

"This incident took place at lunch time, in broad daylight, and we ask that anyone who might have seen a man acting suspiciously around this time to contact us."

Members of the public could contact police by calling 105 or on its website, quoting file number 221116/5518.
