Covid-19 in Fiji: 11 dead, 1187 new cases confirmed

Eleven more people have died from Covid-19 in Fiji, taking the death toll to 272.

In the 24 hours to 8am yesterday, Fiji recorded 1187 new cases of the coronavirus.

There were 1220 cases and seven deaths in the previous 24-hour period.

Health Secretary Doctor James Fong said last night all but one of the victims were not vaccinated.

He said seven of the 11 patients lived in the Suva-Nausori containment area and had died at home.

Two other patients, a 50-year-old woman from Lautoka and a 21-year-old man from Malake Island in Rakiraki, were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

A 78-year-old woman from Tailevu presented to a medical facility in severe respiratory distress on 3 August.

But her condition worsened at the health centre and she died on the same day.

A 53-year-old woman from Nasinu presented to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital's Emergency Department in severe respiratory distress on 2 August.

Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died one day later.

Fiji now has 22,658 active cases in isolation.
