A tramper has died on the Routeburn Track after falling down a slope.
Otago Lakes central area Commander Olaf Jensen said a man and woman were on the track when the man fell.
He said a helicopter took a search and rescue team to the site and they found the woman in a hut.
If conditions permit the police and rescuers will return to the track tomorrow in an effort to locate her companion, Mr Jensen said.
