Police study new Diana evidence

16:04 pm on 18 August 2013

British police say they are assessing new information about the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi al Fayed in a Paris road crash in 1997.

London's Metropolitan Police did not elaborate on the information, but Britain's Sky News is reporting that it came from the parents-in-law of a former soldier and was passed on by the Royal Military Police.

Sky said it understood the new information included an allegation that the deaths were caused by a member of the British military.

Police say they are studying the information and "assessing its relevance and credibility", Reuters reports.

They say this is not a reinvestigation and does not come under Operation Paget, the police investigation into allegations of murder.

That investigation concluded the driver of the car, who was also killed, was drunk and going too fast.

A spokesperson for the royal family says there will be no comment on the new information.

Dodi al Fayed's father Mohammed al Fayed, the former owner of the Harrods department store, has long claimed the couple were murdered.
