Vanuatu opposition accuses MP of taking jobs as bribes

11:12 am on 19 August 2019

Vanuatu's opposition bloc has filed a criminal complaint against the Infrastructure and Public Utilities Minister over alleged bribery.

Christophe Emelee, a former parliamentary secretary, is accused of accepting that role before a failed motion of no confidence against the prime minister.

The Vanuatu Daily Post reported the opposition whip Jay Ngwele claiming Mr Emelee took the job as a bribe in exchange for voting against the motion.

Mr Ngwele has also accused another MP, Bruno Lengkon, of taking a similar job for the same reason.

However, both MPs insist they accepted their posts in good faith.
