Spouse travel expenses not to be disclosed - Speaker

11:14 am on 9 August 2009

The Speaker of the House says details of MPs' private international travel expenses with their spouses will not be disclosed despite a public debate over their expenses.

Lockwood Smith made the comments on the Q+A programme on TVNZ on Sunday, while defending the MPs' expense scheme.

It's been disclosed that politicians spent more than $7.69 million on accommodation and travel in six months.

Dr Smith said expenses vary for each Member, with some politicians in more demand to travel around the country than others.

However, he defended the travel perks of MPs' spouses, saying the nature of the job puts enormous pressure on their relationships with their partners.
