Learner licence time limit proposed

12:47 pm on 1 May 2014

Drivers who hold onto their learner or restricted licences are in the sights of the Transport Agency.

The agency wants feedback on plans to put a time limit on the early stages of car and motorcycle licences.

It is proposing a five-year limit, after which the drivers would have to re-sit their test.

The agency's road safety director, Ernst Zollner, said more than 260,000 people have had learner and restricted licences for more than five years.

He said people most commonly say they can't be bothered or don't need to take the next step.

Feedback will be accepted until 28 May.
