A proposal for a new airport in the Wellington hills has failed to impress the Transport Minister.
Wellington property investor Richard Burrell is proposing an airport be built on a hill in Newlands in the north of the city.
He says his plan would cost half the $1 billion needed to extend the current runway and improve road links to the airport.
Mr Burrell says now is the time to act on the plans as the land will soon be developed.
Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee said it was exciting to see a proposal from someone in the private sector but the Government has no plans to fund an airport in the Wellington hills.
