US live fire plans challenged in CNMI

12:16 pm on 3 June 2015

A lawmaker in the Northern Marianas has introduced a House legislative initiative banning destructive military activities in the Commonwealth.

Angel Demapan seeks to amend the CNMI constitution to prohibit activities like live-fire training and bombing exercises in the islands.

As with any other legislative initiative, passage will require the affirmative vote of three-quarters of each legislative house.

Mr Demapan's initiative comes as the U.S. Department of Defence's draft environmental impact statement is being reviewed by the administration of the Governor Eloy Inos.

The statement proposes live-fire training and other military activities on Pagan and Tinian.
