11:44 am on 4 March 2014

The Fiji Rugby Union is one of 25 countries to express an interest in hosting a leg on the IRB World Sevens Series.

Fiji has also thrown its name into the ring to host the next Sevens World Cup in 2018.

The World Cup host will be decided at an IRB Council meeting in May while the Executive Committee will confirm leg hosts for the 2015/16 season in October.

Submissions closed last week with all nine current World Series hosts indicating a desire to continue.

Along with Fiji, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, Kenya, Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland and Wales have all formally expressed their interest in hosting a leg.

IRB Chairman, Bernard Lapasset, says the unprecedented response reflects the enormous prestige and appeal of Rugby Sevens in the global sporting market place ahead of the sports Olympic debut in 2016.
