Police have recovered a body from Auckland's Kaipara Harbour.

The body was found on Saturday afternoon.

While the body was yet to be formally identified, it was thought to be a 37-year-old man who was reported missing from Piha last Sunday.

The man got into difficulty in the water shortly before being reported missing.

The police launch Deodar, Eagle helicopter, Surf Lifesaving New Zealand members and Coastguard all assisted in the search.

"Police have made contact with the family of the missing person and are providing support," police said.

The death would be referred to the Coroner.
