Police are seeking four suspects over a massive fire in a scrap metal yard in Woolston in Christchurch last month.

Police have been investigating since the large blaze at Garlands Road broke out on the evening of 17 August.

The fire resulted in explosions and heavy smoke and Fire and Emergency sent 15 fire appliances and 50 firefighters to deal with it when it was at its peak.

It continued burning into the following day.

No private properties were damaged although some were evacuated.

Detective Sergeant Michael Varnam, of Canterbury police said the CCTV footage released today shows a group of four people in the area at the time of the blaze.

"We know the footage is not very clear but we hope that someone will recognise those involved, particularly people who know them," Varnam said.

He said the fire was extremely serious, and had it not been for the fast work of Fire and Emergency, it would have posed a serious risk to people's lives and could have caused a lot of damage to homes and businesses.

"It is important that anyone who knows who these people are or that has information that will assist police contacts us as soon as possible."

He also appealed to anyone who has CCTV cameras in the area and thinks they may have relevant footage to contact police.

Police can be contacted via the 105 phone service quoting file number 220822/8276 or via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
