Chris Fleming will step down as chief executive of Southern District Health Board when it transitions to the new Health New Zealand authority on 1 July.
Fleming has worked for 30 years in the health sector, including stints as chief executive of the South Canterbury and Nelson Marlborough DHBs.
He has led the Southern DHB for six years.
Fleming has decided to return to Waikato to pursue businesses opportunities outside of health.
He said he supports the intentions behind the health reforms and believes they will strengthen the health system.
