Radio New Zealand chief executive Paul Thompson described Simon as both a highly-valued and well-liked broadcaster.

Simon presented both Afternoons and Morning Report on Radio New Zealand.

In his last year on Morning Report, co-presenting with Geoff Robinson, the programme won the 2014 New Zealand Radio Award for best weekly or daily feature.

Simon was the first journalist to present Morning Report permanently from Auckland.

"His professionalism and calm, reasoned journalism has been an asset to the Radio New Zealand stable," said Mr Thompson.

Simon said he intended to take some time off before announcing his future plans.

Simon has been a journalist for more than three decades. Prior to joining Radio New Zealand he had a highly-successful television career. Most recently he was a correspondent for the Sunday current affairs programme, and a reporter and presenter on Fair Go.
