Law Society calls for end to court staff dispute

Industrial action is having major ramifications on the court system and needs to be resolved, the Auckland Law Society says.

Court staff have been taking action for several months over a pay dispute.

Auckland District Law Society president Anna Fitzgibbon says court cases are being delayed and adjourned which is not only expensive, but also very stressful for everyone.

She says it is affecting defendants, victims, lawyers and judges.

Ms Fitzgibbson says staff in courts and tribunals play an immensely important role in the smooth running of the judicial system, and in their absence it simply cannot function effectively.

Without debating the rights and wrongs of the dispute, she says, the specialised skills of court staff need to be recognised with fair pay.
