Motion of no confidence in Solomon Islands government postponed

07:39 am on 8 April 2011

The Solomon Islands parliament will not debate the motion of no confidence to oust Prime Minister Danny Philip's government today.

The motion should be debated today which is set aside as a private members day, but it cannot be during a budget session under standing orders.

Parliament's clerk has confirmed to the Solomon Star that opposition leader Derek Sikua has decided to continue with the budget session before debating the motion.

The decision came after the opposition lost six MPs to the government, including the former leader, Steven Abana.

Their defection followed the end of a seven-day notice period for the no-confidence motion.

Yesterday the Prime Minister's Press secretary said the government now had 37 members and Danny Philip was confident of defeating the motion.
