A Head Hunters associate speeding across West Auckland is perhaps lucky his bike ran out of fuel before he could hurt himself or anyone else, police say.
The 31-year-old was spotted by officers on the Southwestern Motorway near Wesley just after 1.30am, heading south towards Manurewa.
"The motorbike wasn't pursued, but our concerns grew given the bike was being driven at extremely high speeds as it re-entered the motorway network," Senior Sergeant Roger Small said.
The biker was watched by the police's Eagle helicopter as it turned north onto the Southern Motorway, before joining the Northwestern Motorway, "driven at high speeds".
But it ran out of fuel in Parakai, just past Helensville.
"Our staff were quickly on scene and got the man into custody without further incident," Small said.
"Police also located and recovered a bag containing shotgun ammunition near the scene."
The accused was due to appear in Waitākere District Court on Wednesday, charged with dangerous driving, unlawful possession of ammunition and failing to stop.
"It's incredibly fortunate that anyone going about their lawful business was not harmed by this man's behaviour, and in fact that the man himself did not succumb to serious injuries either," Small said.
