The agency that deals with youth and families in the Northern Marianas is calling for caution and further research when it comes to the legalisation of cannabis for recreationl use.

The Division of Youth Services administrator Vivian Sablan saids her office supported the therapeutic use of marijuana strictly for those adults suffering from certain medical conditions.

However she said there are areas of the bill that are of critical concern, especially when it came to legalising cannabis for personal use.

Ms Sablan said legalisation will make marijuana easily accessible to adults and especially the youth, which may play a role in contributing to parenting issues and juvenile delinquency.

Her office was also concerned that legalising cannabis may lead to dependency and addiction and could ultimately lead to the use of more serious illegal drugs.
