State Highway 1 at Johnsonville, north of Wellington, is closed after a northbound crash between multiple cars.
A detour is in place through Johnsonville.
A police spokesperson says it will likely remain closed for a couple of hours.
Nobody has been injured, but tow trucks are on the way.
Meanwhile in Christchurch, a cyclist involved in a crash this afternoon has died.
Emergency services attended the scene of the crash involving a single cyclist on Halswell Junction Road at about 2.20pm.
Police say an investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
