Travel insurers are reminding passengers of their rights if their bags go missing after a flight.

The Insurance Council of New Zealand said airlines were responsible for reimbursing the costs of a delayed or lost bag.

Consumer Affairs Manager Sarah Knox said insurance companies had seen an enormous increase in claims related to lost luggage.

She said the Montreal Convention, an agreement including most airlines, lets travellers seek compensation if their bags don't turn up after a certain period.

Knox said insurance companies typically wouldn't get involved until after the airline has responded.
