A person is in hospital with serious injuries after being assaulted when they helped a woman who was being chased by a man following a family harm incident.
Police said the good Samaritan stopped their car for the woman on State Highway 51 in the Napier suburb of Awatoto around 4.30am today.
The victim sustained serious facial and head injuries and remains in hospital.
Police have asked to hear from witnesses or motorists who were in the area at the time.
A 34-year-old man was arrested on a charge of assault and was due to appear in Hastings District Court tomorrow.
