Emergency services have closed off the only road to and from the South Island's Milford Sound after a vehicle caught fire in the tunnel.

The Homer Tunnel on State Highway 94 was closed at about 3.45pm.
Fire and Emergency said the fire was now under control, but expected the tunnel to be closed for a number of hours.
A spokesperson said the cause of the fire is not yet known.
