The paramilitary wing of Vanuatu's police force has accepted its first female recruits.
Twenty young women were among a hundred new recruits who have joined the Vanuatu Mobile Force.
The recruitment is being celebrated as a milestone in a country where being a soldier has formerly been regarded as a man's job which women cannot carry out.
The Daily Post reports that local women's organisations have welcomed the news as a sign that the VMF is adhering to the principle of gender equality.
