New Caledonia's firefighters are set to go on strike today.
A week ago, five unions wrote to the government demanding a meeting to address their grievances.
They call for a restructure of the way firefighting is organised by creating a professional corps and by drawing up a plan for the mass hiring and training of staff.
The strikers plan to rally near the French High Commission this morning.
