Fiji claims Australia and New Zealand interference prompted talks pullout

15:40 pm on 23 June 2008

Fiji's interim government says Australia and New Zealand interference continues to hamper efforts to move Fiji forward.

The interim government has suspended talks with the Forum Joint Working Group on Fiji because of what it sees as a lack of support by Australia and New Zealand.

The Ministry of Information's acting deputy secretary, Major Neumi Leweni, says the Interim Prime Minister felt that the talks should be suspended because little progress is being made in them.

He says travel bans imposed by Australia and New Zealand are preventing the involvement of many qualified, skilled and willing non-military individuals who want to contribute to rebuilding Fiji.

Major Leweni says the bans reflect a misunderstanding about Fiji:

"A lot of people make comments about Fiji and don't realise what the situation is, or have even tried to discuss the issues with people here on the ground. We can say that some of the comments are quite unfair and very unreasonable."
