Investigation begun into DSK gang rape case

06:30 am on 22 May 2012

French prosecutors have opened an investigation into allegations of gang rape in Washington against the former managing director of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The BBC reports the accusations come from a Belgian prostitute who said she was at a hotel sex party there in December 2010.

Mr Strauss-Kahn, 63, is already under investigation with three other men over their roles in a prostitution ring. He denies the allegations.

A charge that he attempted to rape a US hotel maid was dropped last year.

But the case put an end to Mr Strauss-Kahn's career at the IMF.

In March, prosecutors in the northern French city of Lille placed him under formal investigation in connection with what has become known as the Carlton affair, after the Lille hotel in which several orgies are said to have taken place.

Earlier this month, Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyers denied the accusations against him, saying he was the victim of a lynching campaign.
