Australian Tennis Open finalist Serena Williams has deposed golfing legend Annika Sorenstam as the all-time career prize money leader in women's sport.
Ahead of the Open final Williams has earned $US22,725,475 ($NZ44.3 million), overtaking the now-retired Sorenstam who held the record for career earnings.
Williams turned professional at the age of fourteen in 1995 and in her 14-year career she has won every major title as well as nine grand slams, becoming only the sixth woman to achieve such a feat.
Serena faces Russia's Dinara Safina for the Australian Open title tomorrow.
