A large scrub fire in Dunedin forced some residents there to evacaute overnight.
Emergency services were called to the fire on Kaikorai Valley Road about 3.15am.
Police can't confirm how many homes were evacuated, but say residents had to stay away for just over an hour.
Fire and Emergency said the large fire took hold on the nearby hillside, but it was put out by 4.30am.
Senior Sergeant Craig Dinnissen said the cause of the fire has not been established, but police were treating it as suspicious.
