Latest - An irritated Rafael Nadal's pursuit of a rare calendar Grand Slam gathered momentum.

Nadal took it upon himself to reprimand Italy's Lorenzo Sonego before condemning the Italian to a 6-1 6-2 6-4 defeat in the Wimbledon third round.

The second seed had dropped a set in each of his previous two matches at the grasscourt major but on day six he appeared to be on a mission to get the match done and dusted before darkness set in.

But when Sonego convinced officials to close the roof so that the floodlights could be turned on, with the 36-year-old Spaniard leading 4-2 in the third set, Nadal did not appear happy with the decision as it meant his victory charge was held up by some 10 minutes.

Upon resumption, the Italian riled him further by grunting in the middle of a rally after hitting a spectacular shot.

Nadal ended up dropping his serve for the first time in the match and, like a stern headmaster, he beckoned Sonego to the net and gave him an earful about the etiquette of tennis.

That exchange only served to fire up Nadal further and he won the next two games to reach Wimbledon's round of 16 for the 10th time.

After the players shook hands, another lengthy discussion took place at the net as a visibly upset Sonego tried to understand exactly what he had done wrong.

Moments later Nadal was quick to downplay any bad blood between the duo.

"Not spicy at all... from the bottom of my heart... I feel really bad now if I bothered him so I feel sorry for that. That's it -- I will talk to him after but this is not a problem," said Nadal, who next faces Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp.

Ronaldo expresses desire to leave Manchester United

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has told the Premier League club that he wants to leave in the close season because of his desire to play in the Champions League, The Times newspaper reported.

Speculation has been rife about Ronaldo's future at United following a trophy-less campaign and their failure to qualify for the Champions League last season, although incoming manager Erik ten Hag has said the Portuguese international is part of his plans.

The report added that the 37-year-old believes that he can play at the elite level for another "three of four years".

Ronaldo re-signed for United from Juventus in August 2021 and was one of the few bright sparks for Ralf Rangnick's team last season, netting 24 times in all competitions.

The former Real Madrid attacker, who still has a year left on his contract at Old Trafford, has been linked in recent days with a move to Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

Kyrgios enters last 16 with serious title aspirations

Greek fourth seed StefanosTsitsipas labelled Nick Kyrgios a "bully" with "an evil side" to his character after losing a bad-tempered Wimbledon third-round clash.

The 27-year-old Kyrgios produced sublime tennis to earn a 6-7(2) 6-4 6-3 7-6(7) victory but the match will be remembered chiefly as one of the most bad-tempered seen at Wimbledon for decades.

Kyrgios had kept up a running dialogue with the umpire at times during the match, was warned for swearing and upset his opponent to such an extent that Tsitsipas tried to hit him with a smash after coming close to being defaulted for whacking a ball in frustration into the crowd.

Tsitsipas was booed by the crowd at one stage after losing his composure in what he described as a Kyrgios circus. After his loss on Court One, Tsitsipas made his feelings known in no uncertain terms.

Kyrgios produced sublime tennis to earn a 6-7(2) 6-4 6-3 7-6(7) victory.

With the lights on and a deafening atmosphere it was the unseeded Kyrgios who emerged from the chaos with one of his finest Grand Slam victories, edging a nerve-jangling fourth set tiebreak after saving a set point.

Kyrgios claimed victory with a drop shot and he will enter the last 16 for the fourth time with serious title aspirations.

Next up is unseeded American Brandon Nakashima.

An erratic Swiatek committed 33 unforced errors, sending Cornet into the last 16 at the grasscourt major for the first time in eight years.

Amanda Anisimova came up trumps in the battle of the young guns as she toppled 11th seed Coco Gauff 6-7(4) 6-2 6-1, while former winner Simona Halep punched her ticket to the last 16 with a straight-sets victory over Magdalena Frech.

Debutant Harmony Tan, who ousted Serena Williams in the first round, continued her fairytale run with a 6-1 6-1 demolition of local favourite Katie Boulter.

Spanish fourth seed Paula Badosa knocked out twice champion Petra Kvitova 7-5 7-6(4) to set up a last-16 clash with former world number one Simona Halep.

Last year's quarter-finalist Ajla Tomljanovic rallied from a set down to complete a 2-6 6-4 6-3 victory over 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Taylor Fritz beat Alex Molcan 6-4 6-1 7-6(3) to ensure there will be four American men in the fourth round at Wimbledon for the first time since 1999. The 11th seed joined Tommy Paul, Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe in the last 16.

Australian 19th seed Alex de Minaur beat Briton Liam Broady 6-3 6-4 7-5 to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. He joined American Brandon Nakashima who powered past Daniel Elahi Galan 6-4 6-4 6-1.

Earlier, Cristian Garin defeated Jenson Brooksby 6-2 6-3 1-6 6-4 and Botic van de Zandschulp overcame Richard Gasquet 7-5 2-6 7-6(7) 6-1.

Late penalty seals win for Boks over Wales

Fullback Damian Willemse kicked a pressure penalty after the hooter to secure South Africa a 32-29 victory over ill-disciplined Wales in a see-saw test at a raucous Loftus Versfeld.

Dewi Lake also crossed for the tourists, who took the world champions close but paid the price for their cynical play in their own 22 as they lost four players to yellow cards and conceded a penalty-try.

The Springboks might have won by a greater margin but for their own lacklustre play as their tactical kicking was abysmal and decision-making in key phases of play unusually poor. Hookers Bongi Mbonambi and Malcolm Marx, and wing Cheslin Kolbe, crossed for tries for the home side.

The second of three tests will be played in Bloemfontein next Saturday with Wales still in search of a first win in South Africa after 11 attempts.

Jakobsen wins stage two of Tour de France

Dutchman Fabio Jakobsen claimed the second stage of the Tour de France, a 202.2-km flat ride from Roskilde to Nyborg, in a stunning sprint finish after pulling ahead of Wout van Aert and Mads Pedersen.

The win capped a remarkable comeback for the 25-year-old Jakobsen after he spent two days in an induced coma two years ago following a bad crash during the Tour of Poland.

Jakobsen's victory was the second in a row for Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl, who also enjoyed Yves Lampaert's surprise win in Friday's time trial. It was also the team's 50th stage win since their Tour debut in 2002.

Van Aert's push at the end meant that the Team Jumbo-Visma rider took the yellow jersey from fellow Belgian Lampaert, who was involved in a late crash but recovered to remain second in the general classification.

Two-times defending champion Tadej Pogacar crossed the line three minutes behind after suffering a puncture but managed to retain third place in the overall standings.

The finish looked like a two-way tussle between Van Aert and Pedersen but Jakobsen accelerated over the last few metres to take the win in his debut on the Tour.

Sunday's stage three is a 182-km flat ride from Vejle to Sonderborg.
