Sport: Lautoka FC give themselves a chance in OFC Champs League final

Lautoka Football Club is in unchartered territory after advancing to their maiden OFC Champions League final.

The Fijian club champions had previously never made it beyond the group stage, having last competed at regional level seven years ago.

Praneel Naidu bagged the winning goal in last week's semi final second leg in Honiara to edge Marist FC 2-1 on aggregate and set up a grand final showdown against Team Wellington.

Club President Abdul Kadar said to reach the grand final is a huge achievement.

"Everyone is happy here we are going into the finals. It has been a hard journey but still we have tried to come to the path and we are looking forward to the finals, which the dates have been allocated," Kadar said.

Lautoka hosted Team Wellington in December for two friendly matches prior to the Champions League.

The visitors prevailed 6-0 and 3-0 but Kadar expected the scoreline to be a lot closer over the next two weeks.

"While Team Wellington was here we didn't have all our players but I think it will be a good final and we really look forward to playing Team Wellington in the final," he said.

Team Wellington finished runners-up in each of the past three Champions League campaigns but will be full of confidence after eliminating domestic rivals and seven- time defending champions Auckland City in the semi finals.

The first leg is in Wellington next Sunday and Kadar said that meant ultimately everything would come down to the return match at Churchill Park in two weeks.

"We are quite happy that at least the closing ceremony will be held into our country and it's history, it's very big history for Fijian Football in Fiji," he said.

"We will take each game as it comes.

"...all the teams want to win so the New Zealand team wants to win so as Lautoka FC wants to win. It's the final game so we will give our best shot into the finals."
