The Chinese Embassy in Suva says it has been snubbed by the Fiji government over its reported meeting with the Taiwanese president, Chen Sui-bian.
President Chen made an unscheduled stop in Nadi yesterday at the end of his Pacific tour and the embassy believes he met the Fiji Vice-President, Ratu Jone Madraiwiwi, and the chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, Ratu Ovini Bokini.
The Chinese Ambassador, Cai Jinbiao, says his office was told the Taiwanese delegation was only making a transit visit to Fiji.
Ambassador Cai says the subsequent meetings have damaged the Fiji-Chinese relationship.
"We hope that they will realise this, they will realise the kind of influence it caused to our bilateral relationship and we hope that they will not do this again but rather to put their commitment into action and work together with us to push forward our bilateral relationship."
The Ambassador says Taiwan is well-known for its tactics to trick and sabotage China's relations with Fiji.
