On being feminist, queer, and Pisces

09:15 am on 31 October 2013

Hey, girl! I’m Ally and this is going to be my blog. I’m 25 at the moment. I’ll be 26 in February, which makes me a Pisces. I grew up in Christchurch, went to university in Wellington and I’ve lived in Sydney for the last year and a half or so.

I used to write I Am Offended Because and I’m planning on writing some sorta similar stuff here. I care a lot about social justice and feminism and I want to talk about the ways that my life informs those beliefs.

So yeah, I guess I’m going to blather on about myself a bit. The type of feminism I like is an intersectional feminism that looks after people that usually aren’t so well looked after by society, like women of colour, trans* people and sex workers.

When I talk about myself I like to use the phrase “queer fat femme” and I want to write about queer-ness, fat-ness and femme-ness here. I’ve been in a relationship with my girlfriend for the last five years, and embracing femme has been a really important part of finding my own space within the queer community. This also means that I have a lot of feelings about lipstick. And eyeliner. And what base coat you should be using with that manicure.

This year has been a pretty big year for me personally – I’ve been working really hard to address some mental health stuff I’ve had going on. I’m feeling so much better than I was at the beginning of this year and I want to talk about that because, even though John Kirwan did those ads, I still think we don’t talk about mental health enough. Hopefully, that’s going to be the only rugby-related reference I make in this blog.
