Rare haka invitation extended

06:43 am on 9 September 2011

The South African rugby team is in for a rare honour: it's been invited to see the Ka Mate haka performed on the spot where it was composed.

Ngati Toa chief Te Rauparaha, who had links to Tuwharetoa, devised the haka about 200 years ago while he was hiding from a war party.

The actual location is close to Lake Rotoaira near Rangipo in the Lake Taupo region.

Tuwharetoa spokesperson Colin Rangi says a pohiri has been set down for Sunday week and the South African team has been briefed.

It will be the first time the original Ka Mate has been performed publicly in the place where it originated.
