French Polynesia to teach English to toddlers

15:18 pm on 18 August 2006

French Polynesia will trial the use of English among pre-schoolers.

The education minister, Jean-Marius Raapoto, says the plan is to see how children as young as three can learn several languages.

The minister says the idea is to eventually produce a generation of people able to speak three languages: French, Tahitian and English.

In a first stage, the teaching of English will be introduced in a selected number of kindergartens.

Other classes will experiment learning in the indigenous Reo Maohi language.
