Newspaper job cuts in Western Australian

05:43 am on 12 June 2013

Up to 100 jobs are to be cut at West Australian Newspapers through voluntary and potentially forced redundancies.

The company publishes The West Australian, the Community Newspaper Group and 21 titles across the state.

Editor-in-chief Bob Cronin said that 40 of the jobs would include editorial staff. Staff have two weeks to volunteer to leave before redundancies are forced.

In an email, chief executive Chris Wharton said the changing industry and current economic environment had presented many challenges for the company over the past year.

The ABC reports it is the third time in recent years WAN has announced job cuts.

In 2009, there were 90 voluntary redundancies and last September, 15 editorial staff lost their jobs.
