At around 10am, police responded to a burglary at a rural property on State Highway Two near Kotemaori.

Officers spotted the alleged offenders in a car they stole from the property near Tutira and an attempt was made to stop the car with spikes near Whirinaki.

Police said the car continued towards Napier, while the occupants threw a number of glass bottles out of the vehicle towards police.

Police deployed tyre spikes near Napier and the vehicle was stopped on Prebensen Drive around 11:35am.

A police vehicle was damaged by the car when it was stopped, but no one was injured in the incident.

The pair have been taken into custody.
